WW1 War memorial

A central element of the urban hub built during the Ventennio, the War Memorial in Piazzale della Vittoria, designed by Cesare Bazzani, is one of the city’s modern visual symbols.

In its white grandeur it invites us to discover it by moving our gaze along the polished Doric column, a full 32 meters high, to the three bronze statues of Victory, and between the two altars, where the compact forms of a Homeric hero emerge.

A soldier who is caught in the heat of battle and in the catharsis of death or in the return of domestic quiet, when the goddess resheathes her sword and the child clings to his mother.

A work woven with the spirit of sacrifice and an expression of a cycle of life and death.
