Portico di Romagna e San Benedetto in Alpe

The centre of Portico di Romagna maintains its mediaeval structure on three levels: the high area with the castle and the parish church; the intermediate part with the noble palaces from the 13th and 14th centuries, such as Palazzo Portinari, Palazzo Traversari and Palazzo Mazzoni; and finally, the low area with the dwellings of artisans and ordinary citizens.

Two focal points of the city route are the main bridges crossing the Montone River: the Maestà Bridge, for pilgrims on their way to Assisi, and the Brusia Bridge, characterised by three humpbacked arches. Both offer an initial view of the splendour of the surrounding landscape.

Lovers of the outdoors can immerse themselves in nature by continuing along the SS 67 towards San Benedetto in Alpe, the starting point of the Sentiero Natura (Nature Trail), inside the Casentino Forest Park. Here, walkers can admire the famous Acquacheta Waterfalls, described by Dante Alighieri in Canto XVI of Inferno, where the spectacular 70-metre drop of the crystal-clear waterfall leaves everyone breathless.
