Modigliana is a village of art and culture surrounded by greenery and streams, rich in historic buildings, squares and monumental palaces, dominated by the ruins of the imposing Rocca dei Conti Guidi dating back to the Middle Ages and built partly with stones from the nearby river.
In the old village, characterised by streams and ancient houses, stands Piazza Pretorio and the Palazzo of the same name, now houses the Silvestro Lega Municipal Art Gallery. Here, in addition to the works of the master of Macchiaioli painting, works by various authors are exhibited. The works of the Modigliana painter are also the inspiration for the ‘Tableau Vivants’, an event where every autumn the 19th-century style is revived in the houses, in the food and drinks sold in the premises, in the clothing of the participants and in the music that echoes in the streets.
Don’t miss the Duomo, the ancient Pieve di S. Stefano, the many noble palaces in the old town centre, as well as the Convento dei Cappuccini, now home to the Accademia degli Incamminati, the ancient site of the Roman Castrum, according to recent reconstructions, and then the Ponte della Signora, a medieval humpback bridge at the northern end of the town.
Don Giovanni Verità Museum about the Risorgimento period, and contains evidence of the republican passion of the patriot who saved Giuseppe Garibaldi by giving him asylum at his home. One room is dedicated to the soprano Pia Tassinari and, in the cellars, archaeological artefacts dating back to the Bronze Age and the Roman period are on display.
Appreciated for its gastronomy, Modigliana is a favourite destination for outdoor enthusiasts, thanks also to its ‘didactic forest’ of almost 400 hectares of nature on the slopes of the Romagna Apennines; it is an environment with tree species from all continents and a wildlife oasis with 22 km of trails equipped for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking.
