Church of the Suffrage

On the west side of Piazza Saffi stands the Chiesa del Suffragio, begun in 1723 to a design by Fra’ Giuseppe Antonio Soratini and completed only in 1933.

With an elliptical plan, it is reminiscent of the more famous Bernini model of the Church of Santa Maria al Quirinale in Rome, with a semicircular façade bordered by two lateral pilasters and giant pilasters of Ionic order, on which the protruding corners of the tympanum are set.

The interior is divided by a series of pillars and columns, on which is set the very interesting dome, erected in 1784 and decorated with frescoes by the Venetian Guarana and the Bolognese Serafino Barozzi.

Remarkable, in the first chapel on the left, next to the high altar, is the Death of St Joseph, a valuable painting by Antonio Fanzaresi.

Above the entrance door is the organ built by Gaetano Callido, a famous Italian organ builder.
